PROPERTY OF A PROMINENT TEXAS COLLECTOR

OLAF WIEGHORST (American, 1899-1988)
Camping
Oil on canvas
30 x 36 inches (76.2 x 91.4 cm)
Signed lower right: O. Wieghorst

Camping is the result of a lifetime spent in the saddle. Born in Denmark, Olaf Wieghorst pursued a number of different careers before settling on western art at the age of 46. Soon after he migrated to the United States, he joined the Army and was part of the cavalry pursuing Pancho Villa along the Mexican border. This western adventure must have left a lasting mark on the young man. After leaving the Army, he served as a mounted policeman in New York City and it was during this time that he began to focus his attention on painting. Despite the variety of jobs Wieghorst held, the one common denominator would be the horse. When he left New York, he headed west and worked on cattle ranches while painting at night. As an artist, Wieghorst saw his role primarily as a portraitist depicting both man and horse. His work was accepted by Grand Central Galleries, and as his popularity increased, Wieghorst was able to paint full time.
