THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

PROVENANCE:
Doyle, New York, European and American Paintings and Sculpture, May 4, 1994, lot 6.
Ryder, one of the founders of the Brooklyn Academy of Design, earned his reputation as a genre painter who regularly depicted African-American figures in his work. In his depictions, he struck a middle ground between stirring pity for their plight and treating them heroically. He neither romanticized nor victimized but acknowledged the contributions they made through their labor. In addition to his genre scenes, Ryder was a successful portraitist and a member of the National Academy of Design.

Condition Report*: Lined canvas. UV examination reveals that the painting still maintains its old resin varnish, which was spot cleaned to reveal key passages, and also to address places requiring inpaint such as around perimeter for frame abrasion, behind profile of woman's face (though not her face itself), a 1-inch line of inpaint, possibly addressing a tear, and in a few characters of the signature. It is largely untouched by restoration. Framed Dimensions 19.5 X 22.5 Inches
