    Caroline Inez Crawley was born on 6 February 1870, the eldest daughter of George Baden Crawley and his wife Eliza Inez Hulbert and in 1893 married Frederick Rudolf Lambart (1865-1946), eldest son of the 9th Earl of Cavan. The present unfinished portrait is de László's first version of the sitter; he portrayed Lady Cavan later that year in a three-quarter length pose.

    Condition Report*: Original canvas and stretchers. Stretcher bears label of Geo. W. Rodway, Carver, Gilder, Picture Frame Maker, London. Under UV light there is a 6 x 2in (at its widest) area of inpaint on the right side of her neck and a 4 x 1in (at its widest) area of inpaint in the background to the left of her right cheek.
