Since 1948, Walt and Lillian Disney had vacationed at their Palm Springs home in Smoke Tree Ranch. In the 1960's Walt Disney asked Peter if he had ever painted the desert to which he replied that the desert did not attract him, it was just dry sand. Walt didn't let him get away with that and invited him down to their house. Peter enjoyed the beauty to be found inland and, thus, began a new interest. This is one of Peter's desert paintings from that time period.

"I did enjoy the challenge and soon discovered the desert to be full of wonderful things to paint. Naturally, I was going to give Walt the first painting, but Bobbie claimed it so he got the second one!" - Peter Ellenshaw
