Description
Pendant: Supernatural Shamanic Figure with Paddle-shaped ClubsCoclé Province or Azuero Peninsula
A.D. 650 - 1520
Gold, Weight 82.425 grams
Height 2 ¾ in. Width 2 9/16 in.
Single figures wielding two paddle-clubs are less common than paired club-bearers. This individual has a bat-like nose, with nose plug, and bat ears, with eyes protruding on stalks suggestive of the ability to see beyond the ordinary. The unusual and elaborate headdress is so wholly conventionalized that it is uncertain what additional spirit helpers are indicated. In what is probably a development from actual ritual clothing, large concave units at the waist connect with downward curved shapes and triangular pieces to form abbreviated crocodilian profiles which connect to the bottom of each club handle. These too were spirit-supporters of the central figure. The condition is excellent.
The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.
Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
