Description
Pendant: Standing SupernaturalVeraguas or Diquís
A.D. 700 - 1500
Gold, Weight 110.2 grams
Height 3 ¾ in. Width 3 5/16 in.
This massive, raptor-beaked anthropomorph stands on a flattened crescent-shaped bar with profile upward-facing snake heads at either end. From its outer, double-banded edge ten evenly-spaced curls emerge. The male figure wears a waist band terminating in outward facing serpent heads and has a serpent-head penis sheath. His extended hands grasp the curved ends of dependencies fusing with his broad, flattened headdress. Double curls are at the ear areas. The nipples, rib cage, and navel are given unusual prominence in this unusually sculptural figure. The condition is excellent.
The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.
Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
