Otis Dare Huband is considered by some to be one of Texas's most important contemporary artists. He has not received as much attention as some of his contemporaries, probably due to sidestepping the gallery scene and selling directly to collectors. Leaving his childhood home in Virginia, Huband studied at Accademia di Belli Arti in Perugia, Italy as well as receiving degrees from the Virginia Commonwealth University and California College of the arts. In 1965, Huband settled in Houston where he continued to explore his talent and teach for over 50 years. Huband has stated, "I seek to violate the 'white' of the canvas, to make order out of chaos." Utilizing oil sticks and smudges as well as mixing color and curves to create art, this figurative expressionist's works are both playful and evocative.
