We wish to thank Rea Michalová, Ph.D., for confirming the authenticity of this work and for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.

Otakar Kubin, later known in France as Othon Coubine, was a Czech-born painter and sculptor who rose to international fame after settling in France in 1912 and associating with painters of the Paris school. Born in Boskovice, Moravia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), he trained first as a sculptor at the Horice Academy, which left an indelible mark on the artist's penchant for rendering powerful form and volume even in paint. He subsequently studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, became a member of the Prague modern artists' group "Osma" (The Eight), and worked in Antwerp and Italy before settling in France. During the early part of his career, Coubine was particularly influenced by the Expressionists and Cubists before finding his own classicizing style. A notable artistic influence on his stylistic evolution was Pablo Picasso, with whom Coubine formed a friendship.

Dr. Michalová notes in his letter about Coubine, which accompanies this lot: "The figural theme had a decisive role in Coubine's artistic development. Representing human character was for him-in his own words-an uplifting, directly sacred task." The present lot, Femme Nue, depicts Berthe Chaix, whom Coubine met when he moved to Provence, and they married in 1921. She was his preferred model and a comparable image from the same period is in the collection of the Moravian Gallery in Brno. Dr. Michalová also observes that "Sitting Nude (Femme Nue) is a masterful and very rare work...[Coubine] shows all the qualities of his classicism from his best period of the twenties. [The painting] combines a crystal-clear, refined technique with the concept of peaceful, quiet beauty, resulting from the harmony of the composition's individual components and, not least, the subtle nobility and eroticism of the model."
