Description
Oceanic, Papua-New Guinea, Central HighlandsTelefomin
War Shield
Wood, pigment, fiber
Height: 49 inches Width: 16 ¾
Various language groups of the Mountain-Ok (who inhabit the Star Mountain region from which rise four major New Guinea river systems: the Sepik, the Fly, the Digul, and the Idenburg-Mamberamo) fall into smaller groups whose names share the -min suffix, which means "people". (Barry Craig in Harry Beran and Barry Craig, eds., Shields of Melanesia. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 2005, pp.117 ff.). Among these are the Telefomin, from whom a number of boldly cut and painted shields and houseboards have been collected. This example is both the right size and proportion for a shield and retains its twisted fiber loop for holding. Since fighting was done primarily with bow and arrows, the pattern of battle moved around the fewer shield-bearers, behind whom the archers sheltered. The shield-bearer with his shield was thus an important and honored personage.
There is a large crack at the upper proper left, and several cracks lie along the bottom. There is edge abrasion loss along both long sides.
