Description
NORMAN ROCKWELL (American, 1894-1978)Weighing In, Saturday Evening Post cover study, 1958
Mixed-media on paper
40.75 x 31.25 in.
Signed lower right
This piece is a study for the finished painting that appeared on the cover of the June 28, 1958 issue of The Saturday Evening Post.
Inscribed: "My very best to Draper Hill, cordially Norman Rockwell"
Draper Hill (1935-2009) was a long-time editorial cartoonist for the Detroit News, and eminent cartoon historian. He published biographies of Thomas Nast and James Gillray, and was celebrated as the "institutional memory" of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. As noted by fellow cartoonist J. P. Trostle, "among working cartoonists in the US, Hill probably knew more about the field than any other." To fuel his research, Hill amassed a wonderful collection of original comic and illustration artwork, a great percentage of which was acquired directly from his peers near the time of creation. Both Rockwell studies come from Mr. Hill's estate, and hung prominently in his home for many years.
