This remarkable lot gives a vivid insight into Norman Rockwell's creative process regarding his use of reference material to create the illustration Picasso vs. Sargent, which appeared in Look magazine on January 11, 1966. In that illustration, John Singer Sargent's realistic portrait of Mrs. George Swinton is contrasted with Pablo Picasso's cubistic approach to his portrait of Marie Theresa Walter. This concept is presented in a lighthearted manner as with hallmark Rockwell humor.

A printed copy of the finished illustration is also included in this lot.

    Provenance:
    Collection of Mr. Donald Walton
