Early European records entitle these types of blades 'dowry knives' because they were often given as part of gifts given to a bride's family before a marriage. Like other prestige blades from Central Africa, this sword would have been an important possession for elite men of the community suggesting wealth as well as military prowess.

Prestige knives and swords are ornamental rather than functional weapons. The flat shape of the sword and the delicate loop above the hilt identifies the blade as belonging to either the Ngombe or a Mongo subgroup such as the Konda. It is further decorated by cross hatching along the loop and a geometric zigzag pattern up the center.

Handle and blade appear to be in excellent condition with minor tarnish visible.
