Description
Montague Dawson (British, 1895-1973)Forest road, Boldrewood, Hampshire
Oil on canvas
30 x 20 inches (76.2 x 50.8 cm)
Signed lower left: Montague Dawson
PROVENANCE:
Frost & Reed, Ltd., London, by 1958;
Daniel Rees Fine Art, Jackson, Michigan;
Private collection.
Boldrewood is a village near Lymington in Hampshire, in the New Forest, which held connections for Dawson. He enjoyed the forest and painted quite a few of these scenes, often giving them away to friends rather than selling through Frost & Reed. Lymington is a seafaring town near the Solent, the stretch of water which separates the Isle of Wight from the British mainland. An important shipping lane, the Solent and its bustle of activity inspired many of Dawson's maritime works.
Condition Report*:
Unlined canvas. An approximately 1 x 2 inch patch applied to reverse of canvas at proper lower right. Extremely faint stretcher bar marks visible at upper and right edges under raking light. A very few instances of finely patterned craquelure. Repaired hole in lower left quadrant, corresponding to aforementioned patch on reverse. A very few small dots of accretion at right edge, appearing to be errant paint. Not examined out of frame.
Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly. Scattered instances of very fine strengthening to the shadows in the trees, most notably to the large tree at left edge. Additional strengthening applied to the orange pigments highlighting the same tree. Apparent strengthening applied to the blues of the sky.
Framed Dimensions 36.5 X 26 X 2.5 Inches
