Herbert Gurschner (German, 1901-2001)
The dancers
Oil on canvas
16 x 16 inches (40.6 x 40.6 cm)
Signed lower right: Gurschner

PROVENANCE:
Dorothy Carless, Cambria, California;
By descent to the present owner.

Austrian-born British painter Herbert Gurschner studied in Innsbruck and Munich, before he married a wealthy British woman in 1924, and moved to London. There his style underwent a modernist shift. Frequently running in aristocratic circles, he often traveled on the Zeppelin during the 1930s to the United States, where he acquired numerous portrait commissions. In 1939, he obtained British citizenship and served Britain during World War II. After the war, he worked primarily as a stage designer in London.

The four paintings by Gurschner in the present sale come from the collection of Dorothy Carless (1916-2012), an English singer and pin-up for the British troops during the WWII. Later, she lived in California and was the musical arranger for the Edie Adams TV show in the 1960s.

Roland Widder has confirmed the authenticity of this work.
