    MICHAEL WHELAN (American, b. 1950)
Lovecraft's Nightmare (diptych), paperback covers, 1981
    Acrylic on masonite
    16.5 x 27.5 in. (each)
    Initialed lower center

    From the Frank Collection.

University of Maryland, College of Arts and Humanities: The Gallery, College Park, Maryland (labels verso).

Whelan created these stunning paintings as covers for Del Rey's 1980s paperback editions of the work of famed author H.P. Lovecraft. Imagery from both paintings was ultimately published as seven total covers: six using tight details (The Case of Charles Dexter Ward; The Tomb and Other Tales; The Doom that Came to Sarnath and Other Stories; At the Mountains of Madness and Other Tales of Terror; The Lurking Fear and Other Stories; The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath) and one larger "best of" collection that reproduced a larger section of the paintings.

This diptych is not only one of Whelan's finest and most reproduced paintings, but one of the greatest and most definitive works of art related to the writings of Lovecraft, featuring iconic images that reintroduced the weird fiction master to an entire generation of readers and which have become indelibly connected to his classic tales.

Whelan has also published the two paintings as limited edition prints titled Lovecraft's Nightmare A and B. According to the artist, the pair "form his only real diptych...and the paintings can meet side by side either way with one flowing into the other." The paintings were also reproduced in the art book Michael Whelan's Works of Wonder (Del Rey, 1987) and as the cover for A Lovecraft Retrospective: Artists Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, Centipede Press, 2008..
