Description

MICHAEL FRARY (1918-2005)
Drilling Rig
Watercolor
30in. x 21in.
Signed lower right

Michael Frary attended college at University of Southern California, where he graduated with a degree in architecture and a Master of Fine Arts degree. In 1949, Michael moved to San Antonio to serve as the artist-in-residence and faculty chairman at the Marion Koogler McNay Museum. In 1955, he accepted a faculty position at the University of Texas in Austin. In 1970, he was awarded full professorship, and in 1986 he was named Professor Emeritus of Art.

Frary moved freely between realism and abstraction, watercolor and oil, landscape and figure. In this watercolor, Frary has chosen an abstract treatment of a Texas drilling rig. The linear forms of the rig, building, and support structures, become fertile material for Frary's abstraction.
