LITERATURE:
D. Hagerty, The Life of Maynard Dixon, 2010, Layton, Utah, p. 210, no. 164, illustrated (as Coppa's Restaurant Menu, 1938).

According to Dixon scholar Donald Hagerty, Joseph Coppa opened a restaurant on San Francisco 's Spring Street in the early 1930s. Shortly thereafter Dixon contributed to the restaurant his ribald work What Never? Hardly Ever. When the restaurant was taken over and renamed Marconi's Restaurant circa 1941, the original owners retained the painting. The present work was reproduced on the menu cover for Coppa's Restaurant, and on a matchbook cover for Marconi's Restaurant.

We are grateful to Don Hagerty for his generous assistance and expertise in cataloguing this work.

This lot is located in Heritage Auction's San Francisco gallery. The buyer will be responsible for pick-up or shipment from this location.
