Maya Painted Bowl with Primary Glyph BandMaya, Southern Lowlands
C. 600-900 AD
Polychrome Pottery
3" x 9½"
The bowl is painted on the interior with a worn yellow ground, an astrological glyph band surrounding the rim with disembodied eyes suspended; the outer wall with an orange/ yellow surface, bordered in black bands, and surrounding the wall is a primary sequence of compound glyphs in black and deep orange. The bowl has one large piece reattached, some surface pitting, and a chip.
TRANSCRIPTION: a-LAY-ya tz'i-bi na-ja ji-chi yu-k'i-bi ta-u-lu K'UH cha-TAHN-na wi-WINIK SAK-WAHY-si a-AJAW-wa ya-AJAW-wa yu-ku-no-ma-CH'E'N KAL-ma-TE
TRANSLITERATION: alay tz'ibnaj jich yuk'ib ta' ul K'uh[ul] Chatahn Winik sak wahyis ajaw yajaw Yukno'm Ch'e'n kalo'mte',
TRANSLATION: "Here was painted the jich drinking vessel for atole (maize gruel) of Holy Chatahn Person, white spirit lord, the lord of Yukno'm Che'e'n kalo'mte' (emperor of Calakmul).
