THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST
Born near Wurttemberg Germany, Max Weyl, a watchmaker's apprentice, first settled in Williamsport, Pennsylvania upon arriving in the United States in 1851, a town with a large German population and the place where noted still-life painter Severin Roesen settled and found a ready clientele. In 1861, Weyl moved to Washington, D.C. where he opened a jewelry store of his own while painting still lifes and landscapes as a hobby. Not until nearly a decade later did he have the courage to show some of his paintings in his shop window. His art was discovered by Samuel Kauffmann, President of the Board of Trustees of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and publisher of the "Evening Star" newspaper, who had come to Weyl's shop to have a watch repaired. He was taken with Weyl's landscapes and bought a small one. Soon, word spread and other patrons appeared including Mrs. Grover Cleveland and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, who bought and displayed Max Weyl's marshy landscapes of the Washington, D.C. area in the White House.
