The Bamana are the closest neighbors of the Marka, and the Marka are often classed as a Bamana subgroup. Marka masks, however, make much use of sheet brass. This covering is held in place with iron nails. Flat expanses of sheet brass tend to make underlying supports elongated and angular. The present mask of a human face has antelope horns on top, probably indicating a wish that the man wearing the mask could acquire the speed and agility of the antelope. Marka masks appear at circumcision ceremonies that welcome boys as full, adult members of society. Masks also appear in dances to secure a successful hunt or a good harvest. Designs on the sheet brass covering echo the scarification patterns of hunters.
