Oil on canvas
16 x 13-1/2 inches (40.6 x 34.3 cm)
FROM THE ESTATE OF KENNETH KENDALL, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
Faith is a later copy after a part of a design by Sir Joshua Reynolds for the painted west window of the Chapel at the New College, Oxford executed in 1779. The certain original painting by Reynolds associated with the window project is executed at full length and in the collection Earl of Normanton, Somerley. In the window at Oxford, the figure of Faith is shown third from the left in the lower register of the design. In 1785, noted publisher John Boydell published a very large stipple engraving by Richard Earlom after Reynolds' entire New College window, thus popularizing the monumental decorative project.
