    LUDWIG BEMELMANS (American, 1898-1962)
    A Lovely Dawn and All Was Well, Madeline-Inspired illustration, 1959

    Signed on glass lower right

    "In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines... the smallest one was Madeline." So began each of Bemelman's seven Madeline books. This illustration was produced in 1959, the same year that saw Madeline And The Gypsies published. It is a version of one of the pages from that beloved children's story. It may have been an initial attempt at that page, as they are very similar.
