Description
Lime Dipper with Standing ShamanYotoco
A.D. 100 - 800
Gold, Weight 58 grams
Height 10 in. Width 13/16 in. Height (figure) 1 3/8 in.
This cast lime dipper is capped by a standing shaman wearing a large-eyed, open-mouthed mask with a notched lower edge. He has looped ear areas and a high backward-curving cap. He holds a shaman's staff with both hands. he staff and the figure's upper arms, legs, and back are all patterned with incised cross-hatching. Lime dippers were used in connection with gourd or metal containers which held the powdered mineral lime necessary as a catalyst in chewing coca leaves. The dipper tip was moistened so that the requisite small amount of lime would adhere. As the dipper was not polished after casting, the surface is slightly porous in places. Minute dirt residues remain on several parts of the finial image.
Provenance
