In 1954, then-struggling artist LeRoy Neiman received his big break from friend and former colleague, Hugh Heffner, to work for his newly minted "Men's Magazine," Playboy. Shortly after his start, Neiman was treated to what he called "the good life" and in 1960, embarked on a business trip to Europe to find artistic inspiration for a new Playboy feature, illustrated and penned by Neiman, called "Man at His Leisure." Appearing in the magazine for the next 15 years, "Man at His Leisure" showed the artist's impressions of sporting events and social activities. Neiman's success in capturing the high-end, high-society world as a decadent playground is mirrored in his art - fast and colorful. The artist celebrated this joie de vivre with brush and pen.
As a master documentarian of men's culture, it is only natural that casinos feature heavily in Neiman's oeuvre. The present work, Roulette Table at Vegas, has a tight composition filled with glamourous characters and bright, saturated colors. Neiman's layering of pigments heightens the sense of movement and tension as the gamblers place their bets. The moment captured is almost too full, too bright to fit in a single composition or to appreciate at a single glance. The present work is one of Neiman's most iconic, and was later published as the popular print, Roulette II.
