Lee N. Smith III (American, b. 1950)Crosses Along the Hallway, 1989
Oil on canvas
44-7/8 x 57-3/8 inches (114.0 x 145.7 cm)

EXHIBITED:
Whitney Museum of American Art at Equitable Center, New York (and elsewhere), "Real allusions," February 9-April 11, 1990.
During an artist residency in France beginning in December 1987, Lee N. Smith produced seventeen new paintings in Paris, each reflecting an evolving artistic style. Created during that residency, Crosses Along the Hallway clearly demonstrates his exploration of richer surface textures, used to convey deeper, more visceral emotional expression.
Lee N. Smith III moved to Dallas from New Orleans at the age of six. Despite having no formal training, the artist began painting in 1974 and held his first solo exhibition at the University of Texas at Arlington in 1979. Smith quickly gained recognition for his evocative paintings inspired by childhood memories, often set within surreal suburban landscapes. The artist has had major exhibitions at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Dallas Contemporary. Works similar to Crosses Along the Hallway are held in the permanent collections of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Tyler Museum of Art.
