    Description

    Lee N. Smith (American, b. 1950)
    Burning Land, 84
    Acrylic on canvas
    55 x 90 inches (139.7 x 228.6 cm)
Signed, dated, and titled on the reverse: "Burning Land" / 1/84 / LN Smith III

Lee N. Smith III moved to Dallas from New Orleans when he was six. Having no formal art training, Smith started to paint in 1974 with his first solo exhibition at the University of Texas at Arlington in 1979. In 1984, he was one of less than thirty artists chosen to represent the United States at the prestigious Venice Biennale. Smith quickly became acclaimed for paintings that draw from his childhood memories, often set in surreal suburban landscapes. Smith's most acclaimed works use formal characteristics, like vivid color and composition, to enhance dream-like moods, contributing to the sense of nostalgia invoked by classic American archetypes. Smith has had major exhibitions at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Dallas Contemporary.
