Large Maya Eccentric Flint
c. 600 - 800 AD

The pattern of this heavy eccentric flint follows the natural coloration of the stone itself. Eccentric flints have been found within foundations of ruined structures, at the bases of stone monuments, and within important burials. They are called eccentric, even though this one and many others are quite regular in form. The expression, eccentric, clarifies the difference between ceremonial and utilitarian flint tools. The double-pronged flint is serrated on the outside edges and relatively smooth in the U shaped central part. The serrated edges descend to the smooth trunk of the object.
