Konstantin Federovich Yuon was born in 1875 into a family that would include a brother, Pavel, who would become a notable composer. Konstantin was destined for greatness in the Russian art world, studying under Konstantin Korovin at the Moscow Art School and later taking private lessons from Valentin Serov. From this distinguished beginning Yuon travelled to Europe and was greatly influenced by the work of Camille Pissaro and other Impressionists.

Yuon would take his experience into the commercial world by opening the first painting and drawing school in Moscow. He designed sets for plays for the Moscow Art Theatre and Maly Theatre, a career that included completing the set design for Diaghilev's Paris production of Boris Gudonov. He is important for his associations with the historically consequential group of Russian artists identified as the World of Art (Mir Iskutsstva), the Union of Russian Artists and the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. These groups followed the Wanderers in the progression of the associations that marched through the Russian art world and into the Soviet era.

The influence of Impressionism Yuon experienced early on in his life comes through here in An Autumnal View From the Balcony. Yuon makes subtle use of his palette in creating one of his favorite pictures, one he exhibited in his own family room as evidenced by the accompanying 1910 photograph with his family during his time in Moscow. Indeed, the view is probably a scene he witnessed many times from the vantage point of his own home.

Yuon's work evolved as his career spanned well into the era of Soviet Socialist Realism. Youn received the Stalin Prize in 1943 and the Order of Lenin, among many other honors during his lifetime, a celebrated artist who historically lived to see and effect much change in the Russian art community. Before his death in Moscow on April 11, 1958, he was already considered one of Russia's greatest artists, his work prized for its meticulous attention to detail and beauty, the importance of which is compounded by his place in Russian art history.
