Goat Herder at the San Antonio Quarry, 1909
Oil on panel

PROVENANCE:
Private collection, New York.

Goat Herder at the San Antonio Quarry was painted in 1909, right after Onderdonk returned to San Antonio. Therefore, it is not surprising to find the influence of William Merritt Chase, with whom he studied while in New York. The romantic quality of the light and atmosphere contributes to the feelings of timelessness and nostalgia that emanates from this picture. While he may be best known for his wildflower pictures, this painting proves why Onderdonk's excellent genre paintings, particularly those set in San Antonio, are also highly prized by collectors.
