    JULIAN ONDERDONK (American, 1882-1922)
    Coming Rain
    Oil on canvas
    25 x 30 inches (63.5 x 76.2 cm)
    Signed lower right: Julian Onderdonk

    PROVENANCE:
    David Dike Fine Art, Dallas (label verso).

    Coming Rain is, perhaps, a transitional painting between Onderdonk's early Tonalist paintings in New York and the south Texas landscapes that he would paint after his return to Texas in 1909. This painting shows some of the spontaneity and confident brushwork so prevalent in his Texas paintings. His drawing of the trees and bridge is exemplary and shows his skill in depicting the illusion of three-dimensional space.
