THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

A proponent of the Munich style of bold, slashing brush-work, patchwork paint application, and strong chiaroscuro, Joseph Frank Currier was from Boston, Massachusetts but from 1870 to 1898, spent most of his time living in Germany. He became a leader of an American art colony, which had begun as followers of Cincinnati painter Frank Duveneck. Previous to that, Currier studied in Antwerp and Paris and then settled in Munich after the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War.

Condition Report*: Lined canvas. Paint film in fully stable condition. UV examination reveals older varnish with some restorations beneath it and some on top. Beneath the varnish to the right of the figure extending toward the right edge are two linear areas of inpaint, perhaps addressing old tears. It is hard to tell for certain. Also there is a diagonal line of inpaint on the woman's forehead which appears to address a former disturbance in that area. There is more recent strengthening in the lids of the sitter's eyes, her nostrils and in a couple dark places of her face that seems to be on top of the varnish. Also there are some patches and small flecks of inpaint in the background. It was all done judiciously, not liberally. Framed Dimensions 27 X 23 Inches
