Description

Joseph Christian Leyendecker (American, 1874-1951)
Kuppenheimer advertisement study, circa 1920
Oil and pencil on canvas laid on board
19-1/2 x 13-1/2 inches (49.5 x 34.3 cm) (canvas)

PROVENANCE:
Private collection, New Rochelle, New York, acquired 1952;
By descent to the present owners.

This preliminary study by J.C. Leyendecker actually shows the complete (figurative) imagery as it appeared in the final work. There are no additional "chunks" or body parts which
indicates that Leyendecker had already refined and finalized his design intent for the finished painting.

The finished Kuppenheimer advertisement as it appeared in national periodicals was popular, appearing on and off over a four-year span between 1921 and 1925.

We would like to thank Bud Moon for his historical research on the usage of the present work.
