A distinguished New England artist, Enneking was a leading landscape painter associated with the styles of the Hudson River School, Impressionism and Tonalism. He traveled in France where he met Corot and was profoundly influenced by Barbizon artists like Millet. In 1876, Enneking settled in Hyde Park, Boston, which provided a favorite subject for his mature landscape paintings.
