Signed and dated lower left
The Ironmen, part of Cortez' "Homage" series, depicts Norman Rockwell's Horseshoe Forging Contest, 1940, illustration for the story, "Blacksmith Boy--Heel and Toe," The Saturday Evening Post, (November 2, 1940). "The books below Rockwell's painting relate to horses, painters of horses, painters who were masters of realism, and other great illustrators, indicating threads of Rockwell's artistic lineage.
Also depicted:
-Pierre-Jules Mêne, Vainqueur du Derby, 1863 (sculpture);
-Edgar Degas, Beach Scene, circa 1869, National Gallery, London;
-Edouard Manet, A Bar at the Folies-Bergêre, 1882, Courtauld Gallery;
-Archaic Chinese bronze vessel."
Jenness Cortez' work is in the public and private collections of Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, HRH Queen Elizabeth II and The New York State Museum. Additionally, her work is exhibited at The Waterford Museum, The Burroughs Chapin Museum and The New York Historical Society.
A copy of the book, Homage to the Creative Spirit: The Paintings of Jenness Cortez by Karen Rechnitzer Pope accompanies this lot.
