A Scottish-born artist who moved to the United States in his youth, James Hart studied in Germany for three years before returning to New York and establishing his studio. He is one of the prominent figures in the second generation of Hudson River School artists and was Vice President of the National Academy. Like his older brother William, James Hart achieved great success in the 1860s and 1870s for his landscape and pastoral scenes. These bucolic paintings, with their lush colors and idyllic settings, are imbued with a romantic sensibility that was popular in post-Civil War America.
