A native of Virginia, Breckenridge attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he eventually taught after traveling and studying abroad. He is recognized as one of the leading Impressionist landscape painters of his time.
The Phlox Garden features the garden of Breckenridge's home in Fort Washington, dubbed "Phloxdale" because of the profusion of the flower on his property. In his landscape paintings, Breckenridge sought to represent every season and mood of nature, as well as a variety of light effects.
