Description
HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY (American 1873 - 1952)Dinner in a Park, circa 1910
Oil on canvas
35-1/2 x 36-1/2in.

Although the particular story illustrated by this unfinished painting has not been identified, its portrayal of a middle-aged woman and two attractive younger ones (perhaps a mother and her daughters) in conversation around a dinner table with an eligible, attractive young man is suggestive of many that Howard Chandler Christy illustrated. The evening dress of the protagonists and the outdoor, nocturnal setting suggest the elegant life of New York's upper east side in the Edwardian era. Indeed, the sartorial fashion represented in the painting indicates a date around 1910.
Provenance:
Acquired by the present owner from Robert Kashey (Osten-Kaschey, Ltd.), New York, in the early 1960s
