Howard Chandler Christy's art career began as a war artist who captured Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders in battle in Cuba. As noted in Christy's biography on American Art Archives, "Preferring the depiction of pretty girls over men at war, his 'Christy Girl' took her place in the mind of America and countless calendars, magazine covers, book illustrations and collectibles. His WWI Poster, 'Gee!! I Wish I Were a Man' is second in popularity only to Flagg's 'I Want You.'"
