    A leading figure in Boston's "golden age" of painting, Hermann Dudley Murphy studied at the Boston Museum School under Edmund Tarbell, an important early influence, and subsequently in Paris under Laurens and Constant at the Academie Julian. There, he fell under the spell of James McNeill Whistler, whose work inspired his preference for gentle, refined palettes and unified, tonal compositions, whether he was painting interiors or land- and cloudscapes, exemplified by these two works in the Graham Williford collection. Upon returning to America in 1903, Murphy became increasingly successful, winning numerous prizes and receiving one-man exhibitions at the Wadsworth Athenaeum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Portland Museum. His paintings are now in the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, the St. Louis Museum of Art, and the San Diego Museum of Art, among other institutions.

    Inspired by Whistler's passion for appropriate framing, Murphy took up frame making with a similar ardor. In 1903, he and Charles Prendergast opened their frame shop, Carrig-Rohane in Winchester, MA and by 1905 moved the business to Boston. Later the business included the noted frame maker Walfred Thulin.
