THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

This is a rare early work by the Massachusetts-born landscape painter and art educator Henry Orne Ryder (occasionally spelled Rider), who was well known for his paintings of the Charles River. Born in Salem, he attended Newton schools and studied at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris. He belonged to several art associations and exhibited locally at the Boston Art Club and the Newton Club in 1895-6. He was professor of art at Lasell Junior College and Mt. Ida Junior College, both in Newton, and superintendent of art in the Dedham public schools. In this lush green landscape of springtime Brittany, Ryder records the distinctive domestic architecture of the region as well as the pollarded trees which were a favorite picturesque motif of Americans painting in Northern France.
