Polish-Jewish painter Henri (Henryk) Hayden, born in Warsaw, established himself in Paris from 1907, and quickly rose to prominence as a Cubist. His later works, such as the present landscape painted in Alsace in northeastern France, are characterized by a lyrical simplicity akin to Fauvist experiments he had also absorbed in Paris. During his early career, Hayden was promoted by the Parisian gallerist Léonce Rosenberg, who went on to become one of the most important dealers of Modern European art.
