    HARRY P. CARNOHAN (American, 1904-1969)
    Guadeloupe Hills, circa 1950
    Oil on canvas
    22 x 36 inches (55.9 x 91.4 cm)
    Signed lower right: Carnohan

    During his European travels, Harry P. Carnohan studied with the influential modernist teacher André L'Hote and exhibited his work at the "Salon d'Automne" in Paris. He returned to Dallas where he espoused his theories on modern art at Dallas Art League meetings. More open to European modernism than other Dallas Regionalists, Carnohan taught at the Art Institute of Dallas and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center before joining the art department at Columbia University in 1940. Ironically, due to the emerging emphasis on abstract art in New York, he settled in La Jolla, California, working as a furniture and antique dealer. Carnohan's body of work is very small, and a work from his California period is quite rare.

    Condition Report*: Minor paint loss along edges; one inch area of canvas fraying at top right corner edge; craquelure overall commensurate with age; otherwise this painting is in good condition.
