Born in Kansas, Emerson Lewis is a California artist known for his watercolors and landscape paintings. He studied art at Northwestern University before World War I, after which he trained for three years in Florence, Milan, Rome, and at the prestigious Sorbonne in Paris. Upon his return he briefly apprenticed in the Boston studio of Alexander Robinson before entering the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was also an instructor. Lewis moved in 1924 to California and was active in the art community, exhibiting frequently and earning several awards for his portraits, landscapes, and watercolors.
