    HARRY AIKEN VINCENT (American, 1864-1931)
Impressionist View of Trees and a Stream, 1892
    Oil on canvas
    24 x 17 inches (61.0 x 43.2 cm)
Signed and dated lower left: H.A. Vincent 92

Christie's East, New York, 19th and 20th Century American Paintings, Drawings, and Watercolors, November 20, 1990, lot 190 (labels verso and side of frame).

This scene of a march landscape in the morning is a rare early work by Chicago-born landscape and marine painter, Harry Aiken Vincent. Little is known about his early life and career, and many accounts state that he was self-taught. The present work, however, bears the strong stamp of French training, and could quite possibly be a clue to Vincent's artistic life prior to 1918, when he began a lifelong association with the Rockport, Massachusetts art colony and the bold marine and waterfront scenes which established his career.

Condition Report*: Under UV examination there are two dime-sized spots of inpaint in the landscape near the horizon line, and a few scattered dots of fluorescing green paint on the perimeter of the branches. Otherwise no restoration or retouching. Framed Dimensions 29 X 23 Inches
