THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

Born in Hamburg, and trained there, in Düsseldorf and in Berlin, Hans von Bartels was an oil painter of great power. After traveling extensively, especially in Italy, following his studies, he settled in Munich in 1885 where he was appointed professor of painting in 1891. From 1887 on, Von Bartels spent every summer on the Dutch coast, especially at Katwijk aan Zee, where he painted the fisherfolk and their labor. The present work is a fine example of his treatment of this theme: he artfully captures the slippery wet appearance of freshly caught fish, and the humid briskness of the northern light. In addition to his work in oil, Von Bartels was one of the leading German watercolor painters of his period. In this medium he painted marines and scenes of fishing life, characterized by a rude vigor and a great display of technical skill. Bartels made important contributions to the development of watercolor painting, for he was the first to use it for large formats images and dispensed with its earlier, finicky conventions.
