LITERATURE:
N.A. Neff, The Big Cats: The Paintings of Guy Coheleach, New York, 1986, pp. 66-67, illus.
Coheleach is one of the most celebrated and well known wildlife artists working in America today. The Society of Animal Artists has awarded him the Award of Excellence an unprecedented eight times, more than any other artist. Coheleach's formal art training was completed at the Cooper Union in New York after a tour of duty in the Korean War (65th Combat Engineers, 1954-1955). His insistence on painting animals directly from nature is reflected in his specific and detailed canvases, but has placed him in harm's way on numerous occasions, most notably an encounter with a charging elephant in Zambia. In Black Jaguar, we see Coheleach at his best, capturing the sunlight reflecting off the cat's glossy coat as it suns on a rocky ledge.
