Gloria Petyarre, one of four renowned Anmatyerre painting sisters, is internationally celebrated for her energetic abstractions in Bush Medicine and Awelye paintings. An expert colorist, Petyarre first came to prominence in the 1970s as an abatik painter, using hot wax and fabric to create intricate patterns before moving to canvas in the 1980s.
In the last 20 years of her life, Gloria Petyarre's practice largely focused on her swirling Bush Medicine Leaf paintings like Untitled. These works feature rhythmic strokes that represent the seasonal growth of the leaves. The Bush Medicine story is significant to the Anmatyerre and Alyawarr people of Central Australia. It is believed that by honoring this shrub, known for its powerful medicinal properties of healing and regeneration, the artist helps to invoke its strength.
