This romantic view depicts the Cloister of Carennac adjoining the Romanesque Eglise Saint-Pierre, located in the village of Carennac along the Dordogne in Périgord. The village grew up around this beautiful church and cloister belonging to the Cluniac priory that was founded in the middle of the 11th century. A magnificent tympanum retaining traces of original polychroming and a beautiful mise en tombeau adorn the church.

The title of the painting comes from a verse in the "Ballade des dames du temps jadis" ("Ballad of the Ladies of Times Past"), a poem by François Villon that aches with longing for beauty that is no more.
