PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Lower East Side of Manhattan, circa 1950s;
By descent from the above.

Painted in 1958, Blue & Red (Noon Reflection) captures George Morrison's lyrical approach to abstraction at a formative moment in his career. The surface pulses with layered color, deep blues, radiant reds, and soft violets that merge and collide to create a sense of movement and light. Morrison's brushwork feels both deliberate and organic, giving the composition an almost geological rhythm, as if built from shifting planes of stone or sky. By the late 1950s, Morrison had established himself among the New York School painters while maintaining a distinctly personal voice rooted in his connection to the natural world. A member of the Chippewa (Ojibwe) Nation, he often described his abstractions as landscapes of the mind, translating memory and place into pure form. Blue & Red (Noon Reflection) reflects that vision, balancing emotional intensity with quiet contemplation. It is a striking example of Morrison's ability to bridge the physical and the spiritual through color and texture.
