    WILLIAM TROST RICHARDS (American, 1833-1905)
Rocky Cliff with Stormy Sea, Cornwall, 1902
    Oil on canvas
    18 x 24 inches (45.7 x 61.0 cm)
Signed and dated lower left: Wm. T. Richards 1902.

    PROVENANCE:
Sotheby's, New York, American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, March 17, 1994, lot 43.

This magnificent late work by William Trost Richards is a consummate example of the artist's mastery of moving water--a subject he first attempted some 22 years earlier in his native Newport, Rhode Island. Here, in this scene of Cornwall, England, with its rugged cliffs and restless water, are all the toughest painterly challenges Richard set for himself as a late-career painter: churning sea, lacy foreshortened patterns of foam on the water's surface, opalescent cliffs suffused with light-struck mist, the transparency of a curling wave, and the lucid but moody windswept sky.
